The Gilded Cage

The view from the courtyard of the Palazzo del Doge in Venice was lovely but it also reminded me that the Doge was essentially trapped here for the rest of his life. A figurehead, he could only really be a symbol of the state and the State doesn't like to lose track of its symbols.
