12AUG2006: Ravenna, Italy

Ravenna was surprising, with it's Byzantine wonders, and all the silence (I was there on a Sunday I think). As I was walking to the tomb of Theodosius, I turned left and saw this scene. The clouds looked like they were pouring over the edge of something, upwards into space.

The view from the courtyard of the Palazzo del Doge in Venice was lovely but it also reminded me that the Doge was essentially trapped here for the rest of his life. A figurehead, he could only really be a symbol of the state and the State doesn't like to lose track of its symbols.
