10MAR2006: Bats taking flight, Austin, TX.

In a "happy accident" of civil engineering, Austin's Congress Avenue Bridge contains a slotted bottom that is a perfect fit for bats and the bridge has been adopted by 1.5million Mexican free-tailed bats, making it the largest urban bat colony in the world. They take flight each night at dusk and ascend in a column from the bridge. It's an awesome sight to witness. More info available here.

3MAR2006 SD400: Mountain View CA walking home

Walking home after a rain shower in Mountain View, I saw this rainbow and it was hard to capture it. It was a double rainbow and I saw it stretch all the way across the sky and then start to disappear from left to right, like the Bifrost Bridge retracting. Magical, and I'm not ashamed to say so.

It had been raining earlier that morning and around 1 o'clock the clouds broke up some. I love that time, when there are still clouds in the sky, the dad-blasted rainbow hasn't come out yet and you have that almost divine shaft of light streaming down through the clouds.
